From an unprofitable company to the leaders of Kazakhstan: KazAzot on the achievements of Independence

The third stage of modernization of the KazAzot plant is being completed in Aktau. Over the 30 years of the country's Independence, he has become the leader in the production of saltpeter in Kazakhstan from an unprofitable enterprise. The company provides 40% of the domestic market. But negotiations are already underway with foreign investors on a complete modernization. This will increase the capacity and meet all the needs of domestic farmers in fertilizers. KazAzot is the largest fertilizer producer in Kazakhstan. By the end of 2019, the company took the first place in the ranking in terms of the area of use of mineral fertilizers – more than 409,000 hectares. This year, the management has planned to produce 360,000 tons of ammonia and ammonium nitrate, but by the end of the year it plans to break its own record. For comparison, 10 years ago the plant produced only 50,000 tons of saltpeter per year.

Arman MAULESHEV, CEO of KAZAZOT JSC: The capacity of the Kazakh market today is 600 thousand tons, and we occupy only 40 percent. Everything else is imported from Russia and Uzbekistan. The goal is to fully supply its domestic market, with plans to produce 500,000 tons of saltpeter per year as early as next year. Updated hardware allows you to do this. By the way, the plant independently produces electricity — 70% of its own demand.

Baurzhan ZHUMABEKOV, DIRECTOR OF THE TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT OF KAZAZOT JSC:

To a greater extent, we are independent. These 70% ensure that we keep the main production afloat, that is, any change in supply from MAEK could previously lead to a complete shutdown of production. At the moment, our main production is powered by our own electricity. The successful operation of such enterprises is a contribution to the development of the region, the authorities emphasize. Therefore, special attention is being paid to increasing the share of the processing industry in the oil Mangystau region.

Bekbol ORYNBASAROV, DEPUTY AKIM OF MANGYSTAU REGION:

We are talking about an increase from 3% to 6%, the volume of products produced from 6 million to 183 billion is a huge success, I think those companies that are in this industry will occupy their niche in the economy of our country and especially in our region. According to the deputy akim, due to the economic viability of the state, the largest corporations operate in all sectors of the economy of Kazakhstan.
